Hi!

A little about me, Stephan Kesting, the super-serious and totally not pretentious author of Perseverance, Life and Death in the Subarctic.

My Story

I'm an adventurer, jiu-jitsu practitioner, and firefighter. These activities all require making critical decisions under pressure, which is one of the central themes I write about.

My online presence is bifurcated between my martial arts channels and my outdoor channels.

On the martial arts front, I've been training in the martial arts since age 12. I've trained in Judo, Kung Fu, Kajukenbo Karate, Jun Fan / JKD, Sambo, Indonesian Silat, Phillippino Kali, and am currently a 4th degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Tens of thousands of people have read my books, taken my courses, and watched my Youtube videos.

In the outdoors I've criss-crossed the North for 40 years. I've done many solo trips into the Arctic and have worked as a canoe and raft guide, safely leading large groups in the remote wilderness.

My academic background is a BSc in Biology with a minor in Environmental Studies from McGill and an MSc in Arctic Botany with a specialisation in climate change from UBC. I worked as a field biologist for seven years, which deepened and informed my relationship with the natural world.

When not on the mats, in a canoe or in front of a typewriter I work as a captain in the fire service. In 2001, I received the National Medal of Bravery for rushing into a burning warehouse to save two trapped firefighters.

I'm very excited to share my latest book, Perseverance, Life and Death in the Subarctic, with you. It's the story of, and lessons learned from, a 1,000 mile solo journey through some of the most remote terrain on the planet after a kidney transplant.
